Ashley

Ash had a tough start to life. He lost his dad to an overdose on his fourth birthday and was hit, near-fatally, by a car at a pedestrian crossing on the way to school when he was nine. Life hasn't exactly been smooth. Now 21 he has broken through the hard times and is living his dream of renting a flat by the ocean in Maroubra, surfing and skateboarding daily and working part time at Woolworths.

BEAU

Beau, a main character in The Oasis, has gone from strength to strength since recovering from mental illness. On April 8 he delivered a keynote address at the launch of the National Youth Commission Inquiry into Youth Homelessness, using the story of his own personal struggle to illustrate how crucial it is to tackle youth issues for the future of Australia.

Daniel

Daniel ended up at Oasis after a bad family breakdown in North Queensland. He is very connected to Paul and that has largely motivated him to pull himself together. After becoming involved with Oasis services he maintained full time employment through the Salvos landscaping team, and was quickly promoted to team leader. He has recently moved back to North Queensland to work and reconnect with his family but stays in regular contact with Paul.

Daniel R

Daniel R is an articulate, intelligent creative young man who wants to change his life and help other young people. He has lived a hard lifestyle spiralling deeply into drugs, crime and homelessness but never lost his perspective on life. At 21, he is already very philosophical. He has some wise words for others going down the path he chose.

Dean

Dean is a wildcard known for getting in trouble and fights – but always with style. He is something of a fashion guru around Oasis and always looks hot, with the latest Nikes and streetwear, hair carefully gelled.

Ella

Hailing from a middle-class family, Ella G became homeless in her mid-teens and did it tough sleeping on trains and busking for money. Through Oasis services, she finally got her act together and now lives in private accomodation. She’s rebellious in style and nature, and crazy about skateboarding. Her talent for radio, nurtured at the Oasis Streetradio program, has led her to a coveted job with 2GB radio.

Esther

Esther is an accomplished artist who spends all her free time making jewellery with whatever materials she has. She often sets up a stall and sells her pieces outside Oasis. Esther was living on the streets for untold months before she finally secured more stable accommodation – first in boarding houses and then in an independent apartment organised by SWISH housing. She is currently away from the city, fruit-picking in Queensland.

Fletch

Fletch came to Oasis from country NSW in his late teens after a turbulent childhood and still has all the honesty, generosity and wholesomeness of a country boy. He has worked on the Salvos landscaping team, completed the Foxtel Street TV video making course and lives in independent housing.

Frankie and Bree

Frankie and Bree are an Oasis couple who have come a long way through difficult times. Their first child was born in 2006 and they are living successfully as a little family unit in their private flat. Frankie also has a job on the Salvation Army maintenance team and Bree is the most doting mother any child could hope for.

Freshie

Rodney gained the nickname Freshie when he first arrived in Australia from New Zealand, 'fresh off the boat'. He was a long term resident of Oasis accommodation and through this experience was inspired to write and perform several songs about his connection to this 'surrogate home'. Freshie's creative talent really shines in his lyrics and singing which have been immortalized in song.

Jodie

Jodie has had a tough time in the past living in refuges and caught up in street life, but things are looking good now that she is approaching motherhood. Life is stable and she shares a flat with her long term partner Matt in public housing in Redfern. The biggest thrill will be taking her baby home and caring for him successfully, despite all the adversity she has faced. “I don’t want my kids to be like me at all!” she says earnestly.

Matty

Matty suffered greatly as a young boy through the loss of his parents and subsequently spiralled into serious drug addiction. Now in his early 20s, he is just getting his life together and has made dramatic improvements few believed were possible. In 2007 he worked consistently on the Oasis maintenance team and lived in stable supported accommodation. He continues to strive towards a brighter future and remains in contact with Paul.

Michael

With his outgoing nature, Michael is the resident charmer at Oasis. He has been a regular student at the school and is striving to get his high school certificate against significant odds. He is also highly athletic and dreams of creating the first street roller hockey team with the kids of Oasis. He can routinely be found rollerblading around the city practicising his moves.

Sarah & Beajay

Sarah and Beajay have a longstanding but fraught relationship and are known as the ‘glamour couple’ around Oasis. Beajay has had bad drug issues in the past but is committed to resolving them. The two share a deep connection which somehow withstands the pressures and dramas of every day refuge and street life.

Sonya

Sonya has emerged from her troubled teenage years as an inspiring, strong, educated and motivated young woman. She talks from experience about future aspirations and getting her life together after heroin addiction and hitting rock bottom.

Tessa

Tessa has two young children, Maleek and Brihana whom she cares for with her partner Wayne. She doesn’t have much family support as she lost her mother, but is resilient and resourceful even though she lives on welfare. She has an important message for other young potential mums about the challenges and hardships of raising kids when you’re still only a kid yourself – and still manages to create dreams of her own which she will pursue when her children grow up.

Toni

Toni is the dedicated mother of Shakira, a gorgeous healthy little blonde who is cherished around Oasis. Though she didn’t have a great childhood and adolescence herself, she is committed to breaking the cycle and giving her daughter the best life and opportunities possible – and will sacrifice whatever she has to, to achieve it.
